First impressions

Fifth day into this trip, I am able to find where all the essential buildings are: the sociology department building, supermarket, nice cafes, parks and the way home, without looking at the map.

The campus is truly beautiful and well maintained. A mix of colonial, enlightenment Romanesque and modern glass structures make up the whole campus which is located right in the heart of New Haven.

This is also the week when many freshmen arrive to start a new chapter of their academic lives. Walking tours crisscross the campus avenues with young faces full of excitement, anticipation and confidence.

After a negative Covid test result, I felt more confident to roam further afield and discovered a serene nature reserve north of the city. It was a hot day and I could only managed a short walk. I could really see some similarity between the landscape of New England and Old England, with a certain tamed tranquility lingering in the landscape.

Up to this point I still haven’t heard more from my department other than a once a week session. However I do expect to have more events as spin offs from these regular sessions. I have also reached out to the musical societies of the university, and uploaded videos of my singing as an audition for one of the choirs. I hope one of the conductors would find me interesting and I get to sing in one of the Christmas concerts before my return to London.
